Introduction
This is a large building owned by the Town of North Stonington on the edge of the Town’s Village District. The building was used to house our Middle/High School students but is no longer being used as a school. Currently, the only inhabitants are the BOE’s Central Office Staff, the Town when we are holding municipal meeting, voting and the Registrar’s office. It was proposed that the one-story wing be demolished as part of the School Building Plan. There was not enough money at the end of the project to make this happen due to unforeseen expense in the removal of PCBs within the refurbished Elementary School. The two school wings are empty, except for some storage areas used by the school system in the two-story wing. Last year’s expenses for maintaining the building were approximately $130,000.00.
There is also a deed restriction as to the use of the building. This can be found in the Wheeler Library’s original deed to the Town restricting the use of the building to Secondary Education uses only. It is my understanding that restriction will be amended to read “Education” with the word “Secondary” dropped in the near future.
